Are pets safe with flocked artificial trees?

Artificial Trees and Their Potential Danger to Pets: What You Need to Know

It can be challenging to keep an untrained puppy or kitten from getting into your artificial Christmas tree, especially when it’s its first time and you are using a flocked tree.

Even if your puppy or dog is used to not jumping on trees, you should still exercise caution.

This article describes a few pet safety hazards and suggests ways to prevent them. Read on!

Unless your pet has been taught not to chew on the cords leading to the lights, you should position the lights further away from your flocked artificial Christmas tree.

In addition to severe damage to the mouth tissue, electric cord injuries may result in the inability to eat for the rest of your pet’s life, breathing difficulties, or even death. Examine your electric lights for chew marks or potential fire hazards.

Ornaments

The most precious ornaments should be hung on the highest branch of your tree and firmly secured. Select ornaments that won’t break easily if you want your holiday season to be stress-free.

Also consider displaying delicate, glass, or valuable ornaments in a place your pet cannot reach.

Display them in a shadowbox on the wall, or drape them from a garland over the mantel, window, or doorway.

Tinsel

While tinsel makes beautiful tree decorations, it is also dangerous. Just a few tinsel strands can cause your dog serious intestinal obstruction, or even death. The same is true for edible ornaments like candy canes, cranberry strings, and popcorn.

Animals’ intestines can be torn by strings, putting their lives at risk. And as you may expect, these items will attract your pet’s attention when left on an artificial Christmas tree.

Besides garlands and angel hair, other decorations that can be harmful include lit candles, mistletoe, and liquid potpourri, which can be ingested or spilled.

The holidays will be a much happier and healthier experience for you and your pet when you’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure its safety.
